A
concept that I found interesting in chapter 11 was about mobile telephony. Trenholm
discussed that young people think that a cell phone is considered a necessity
instead of a luxury. I know that I am apart of this generation that believes in
that, though, I do think that cell phones can still be considered a luxury.
Young people are starting to get cell phones at a younger and younger age,
which promotes more communication with peers outside of school for them. Some
parents are not able to afford the expensive and ongoing bill that cell phones
require for their children. The new smart phones provide even more ways for
communicating with people because they give us apps such as Facebook, Twitter,
email, and Internet access that we can contact people with. My generation
heavily relies on cell phones, but I definitely think it is possible to live
without them, since past generations have proved that they were able to live
without a cell phone when they were our age.
I got my first cell phone when i was 15 years old I was so excited of course my phone plan was limited since it was just for emergency use! So I used aim and my home phone more than my cell phone. It wasn't until I was 17 when my mother upgraded to a phone plan with texting. Now that I pay my own bills I have upgraded to smart phone and not my phone has become a luxury item. My little brother received a phone when he was 12 however he doesn't really use it but still I get your point. I wonder how many people our age 20-30 have home phones???
ReplyDeleteKylie Jones,
ReplyDeleteI challenge you to go a week without your phone! Ha ha I like the part of your post when you said that your generation heavily relies on cell phones, but you could live without them... I agree that past generations have lived without them and that you would not physically die if you do not have your phone but the argument I would make is that as times change so do peoples needs. Imagine living in this competitive world as a business woman or man without your phone. Could you compete? From one phone you can call, text, record voice, video, photographs, email... the list goes on and on. As you riffle through your purse to find 10 different gadgets that do 10 different things you are already left in the dust. Also many companies require a cell phone due to emergency reasons as all other comms might go down and you can always dial 911 from a cell phone.

Hey Kylie Jones,
ReplyDeleteIt's so true that young people nowadays feel like they can't go without their phones! I know this because I am exactly this way. I feel completely naked when I lost my phone or forget my phone at home. I found it pretty funny when not too long ago I see a little girl literally only like 6 years old, with her own activated cell phone. There's this little girl I think she's about 8 years old who comes in with her parents and hangs out at the bar! She always has her iPad in hand. Some phones are expensive, but mobile phones have definitely become more affordable nowadays. I only pay $25 a month and it's not "ghettro" believe it or not, AND everything is included even free internet and texting!
Hey Kylie Jones,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with on the fact that it is possible to live without your phone. Unfortunately with today's advance technology, we are learning to be more impatient each day. The faster the better right? Technology is only getting faster. So to only slow it down, it would drive everyone nuts! It's just something that the new generation is used to. For example, they are continuous trying to build faster smart phones, as if the 3G network was not fast enough. Now they are looking to expand to the 4G network, of course with the exception that you have to pay more for faster internet on your phone. In my opinion, that is so unnecessary when you already have full speed internet on your computer.
Dear Kylie Jones,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. Moreover, I also, agree that many “young people think that a cell phone is considered a necessity instead of a luxury.” Our dependency on cell phones has definitely increased over the years whether we may utilize our phones to keep in touch with our friends or family or whether our very own jobs “force” us to constantly be connected or “on call.” Furthermore you mention that you do think it is possible to live without them nowadays since past generations have proven capable of doing so. However, (as a devil’s advocate) do you truly think we can live without our cell phones nowadays being that our lives have been so deeply embedded with this technology? Imagine the effects on society today if we lived with no cell phones.
Is it possible? ;)
