Week 8 - Post 2

The characteristics or behaviors that lead me to judge others as unattractive are certain interaction cues. Conversation can make others unattractive if it becomes awkward or difficult. Also, nonverbal cues can make a person unattractive. For instance if a person doesn’t smile or avoids eye contact, it can lead me to judge them as unattractive. Duck’s filtering theory makes sense to me because each filter is an important factor that can determine any relationship. The sociological or incidental cues, as well as physical proximity, are extremely important to consider in any friendship or relationship. I have definitely eliminated someone by using pre-interaction cues and then reconsidered them based on interaction and cognitive cues. People tend to make judgments about people based on the way they look, and while those first judgments may not be positive, you can get to know a person and really enjoy them because of the easy conversation and values that you share.
