Week 3 - Post 1

In the eyes of a social constructionist, we “build worlds” through collective representations of reality. These representations consist of symbolic codes, cognitive customs, cultural traditions, and shared roles and rules. An idea that we talk about in our culture that doesn’t exist, or at least is extremely rare, is the amount of freedom that we have. Some cultures have a different structure to run their country. I think that most people in the American culture can agree that we are lucky to have as much freedom as we do. The freedom we have contributes to our happiness and success immensely. Our culture’s freedom leads to opportunities, and when people take advantage of those opportunities, they succeed. We are able to accomplish things that only very privileged people in other cultures could accomplish. We have the ability to climb from nothing to success due to all the opportunities that freedom provides for us.

  2. Hi Kylie, I agree that Americans are lucky to have this much freedom. Especially a freedom of expression, which some countries do not have such as China. And yes, you are right about how some cultures have a different structure in running their country. For example, China is running under Communist party and many rights are taken away from the people of China. A great example can include the right to access social networks that involve freedom of speech such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Youtube. Many other countries like China are still fighting for their freedom and we must be able to appreciate the many privileges that we have here in America.

  3. The amount of freedom we have in this country is valuable. I agree that Americans are aware of the freedom we have, but I think we don’t appreciate it sometimes. I never fully appreciated the freedom we have until I started travelling abroad. I’ve been to a couple communist countries and even though people are still free to do as they please, they have limitations to other things also. Limitations can be frustrating and now I understand that Americans are privileged. Our culture’s relentless obligation to having freedom has essentially built our world into believing we are lucky. Quite frankly we are pretty lucky.
