Week 2 - Post 2

Although the Greeks believed that to be an orator, an individual had to be morally good, I disagree with this idea. I believe that anyone can be a great public speaker, or orator. Take politicians, for example, who are typically great orators, but they do not always tell their audiences the truth. When one doesn’t tell the truth, it is considered morally wrong.  Truth is an important factor of being morally good, but someone could be telling a lie so well that people truly believe it. An orator could have amazing public communication skills, yet lie their face off, and still be great at speaking. I believe that there is a connection between goodness, truth, and public communication. When an orator combines truth and goodness into his or her public communication, along with the skills it takes to be a public speaker, he or she will hold ultimate power.

  1. I definitely agree with your answer! I know so many great speakers who have been extremely successful in life. Some will use their effective speaking skills to land job opportunities while some can come up with gnarly persuasions to make sales and goals. However, there are examples where people have abuse the power of being a great speaker such as, manipulative speakers in abusive relationships, cheating spouses, brainwashing a crowd of people to do something unethical, and etc. Therefore, I think that it’s fine to be untruthful as long as you do not take advantage of the situation and hurt anyone intentionally.

  2. I agree with you when you talk about our politicians and their ability to lie while being a phenomenal orator. Their goal is to raise money and get into office. Once they have achieved that, they raise additional money to get into a more powerful position in office. While truth and goodness may seem like the ultimate power holder, it is probably more evil and connections that creates the power. If you tell the truth, the mass population may not like that. People only want to hear what they want. There have been motivational public speakers for the people. Unfortunately, the bad people end up killing them off because they threaten the evil powerful people.
