Week 4 - Post 1
A speaker has definitely influenced me before, although this speaker isn’t well known or famous at all. I don’t have a specific person who I would consider the best speaker I’ve ever heard, but when I think of really good speakers, I tend to think of politicians. Their communication is memorable because of their delivery and ability to sway people with their arguments. Although most politicians tell lies in their speeches and with what they communicate to the public, but sometimes their lies can be very convincing. In my mind, the more able you are to convince someone of your own ideas, the better speaker you become. The worst speaker I’ve ever heard would probably be someone from my previous Comm20 class, which is understandable, since most people are not comfortable with speaking in public. Their lack of confidence in what they were saying was severely affecting the delivery of their speech.

Hi Kylie,
ReplyDeleteI think you have the right idea that you don't really have a specific person that influenced you but you do know what makes a good speaker. The ability to sway people with arguments is key. Consequently bad speakers are not very convincing. I think you said it best as you stated, "their lack of confidence in what they were saying was severely affecting the delivery of their speech." I think you hit it on the head because the lack of confidence is one of the biggest differences between effective and ineffective speakers. You can have prepared a great speech full of interesting facts but if you fail to deliver the message with confidence it will most likely always fall flat.

Hello Kylie,
ReplyDeleteI like how in your example you talked about politicians being good speakers. I completely agree with you because politicians always tell the audience what they want to hear whether its true or not. They prepare themselves to face the audience, by knowing what type of audience they may have in front of them. They are good at telling lies, but if they get a positive reaction from the audience then they did their job. For example, if a candidate running for president goes to speak to an audience in a city where there is high unemployment, the candidate will focus on providing more jobs for Americans. I completely agree with you Kylie, politicians are good public speakers because they know what to say, how to say it and persuade people to agree with them.

Hey Kylie Jones!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first attempted to answer this discussion question I found it difficult to pinpoint a specific person as well. I ended up choosing a politician as the person that greatly influenced me. As you mentioned, these politicians are such great speakers. It’s almost like watching a performance, where everything they say is believable and convincing. If funny because, we, as an audience know most of what is said and promised is unlikely to occur, but politicians still able to be convincing. I need to learn this art! Between the language play and the confidence these politicians can sell anything to anyone.
