One
research method listed in Table 13.3 of chapter 13 that I found interesting was
ethnography. This method requires the researcher to practice exactly what he or
she is studying and “may actually ‘go undercover’ as a participant” (354). I
think this is an interesting research method because it forces the researcher
to experience firsthand what he wants to know. It seems to me that it would be
one of the most reliable forms of research because the researcher experiences
the research. Another interesting method is survey research. I found this
interesting because I have conducted surveys in other classes before and it is
definitely a great way to get information, as well as the fact that it is a
very organized research method. If I wanted to study some aspect of deception,
my research question would be, “ How does deception affect interpersonal
relationships through the Internet?” I would use the survey method, but I would
make it anonymous since people who are deceiving probably will not admit to it.
Kylie Jones,
ReplyDeleteI also thought ethnography was an interesting research method. The researchers are able to experience and study what he is trying to figure out. Going “under cover” and pretending to be someone else seems like a fun way to do research. They are able to watch with their own eyes and understand better what they are trying to study. I also agree that survey research is an organized method when trying to find out answers. You are able to write your own questions and distribute them to people you want to. In the end you are able to tally up the results right away.
I enjoyed ethnography just as much too! Researchers are able to do an unbiased study. Like you, I also chose and agree with the survey research because it's no fun when we have to give accurate data with our identities. For example, when we do class surveys at the end of the semester, I tend to be more honest with my answers when I am filling out the surveys. Especially about teachers who I have had a horrible experience with. If the surveys weren't anonymous, I really doubt students would want to participate in them. However, not all surveys are anonymous. In fact, there are other surveys that require a little bit more info like demographics in order to have a more accurate data.
ReplyDeleteI liked reading about the concept about ethnography that you talked about. It does seem like a cool method and it would be fun to try out. Since it requires the researcher to practice exactly what they are studying and they might need to go “undercover” as a participant would be fun to do. It does make the researcher get first hand experience on what they want to know. It would seem to be the most reliable, since they are doing it and getting information at the same time. I think your research question would work well with the survey method and it would allow participant to answer freely.
